How do I determine my cat's age?

The surface is uniformly smooth, the cat should be about 6 years old. At 10 years, the cat’s teeth start to fall out, which is easy to spot. There is, however, a clearer scheme, drawn up by felinologists, which gives a reasonably accurate estimate of a pet’s age:
  • first teeth erupted – cat is 1 month old,
  • milk teeth are coming in – 5-6 months,
  • central incisor teeth in the lower jaw have fallen out – 1.5 years,
  • Medial incisors in the lower jaw have fallen out – 2.5 years,
  • central incisor teeth in the upper jaw have fallen out – 3,5 years,
  • Medial incisor teeth in the maxilla have fallen out at the age of 4.5 years,
  • traces of abrasion on the canines – 5 years,
  • end teeth in the upper jaw have fallen out – 6 years,
  • changed and abraded surface of the transversely oval central incisors in the upper jaw – 9 years,
  • fallout of the central incisorsage 10-12 years,
  • all central teeth fall out – 12-15 years.

Generally, cats live up to 15-16 years, although there are certainly cases in history where cats have survived up to 30 years. And, of course, if you are wondering how to determine a cat’s age by year, you should also pay attention to its living conditions: in more favourable conditions, the teeth may fall out later, while in well-fed cats, the loss of the incisors may be a little later.

Cats and human age

It is very common for cat owners to try to compare their cat’s age to that of a human, and the most common rule of thumb is to multiply the number of years a cat is a year by 7, which is assumed to be the cat’s age when converted to human terms. However, felinologists argue that this is not entirely correct: a cat’s age can be compared to a human’s age, but the way to convert it to a number is different, and the difference in years and the way to calculate it will be different from year to year. Cats age at different speeds, much like people do. With the exception of Sphynx and Peterbald, all cat breeds live an average 20 years with the females generally outliving the males by 1-2 years on average. The Birman breed can live up to 25 years or more if they’re cared for properly with diet, exercise and medical visits as needed.
And like people, some cats age faster or slower than others. This is likely due to the fact that the genes cats are born with that dictate their size and appearance have an impact on aging as well. Following is a list of cat breeds, ranked by how quickly they age, from youngest to oldest feline senior citizens. The kitten you choose from the litter will be a kitten for less than a year before it becomes an adult. While adult cats vary greatly in size, one characteristic all cats share is a steady state of decline in their ability to reproduce. Cats are considered “old” if they reach the age of 15 or 16 years, or about 80 in human terms.
Male cats usually start showing signs of aging at about 8 to 9 years old. By 10 years, male cats can develop joint problems and arthritis, and their eyesight begins to weaken.
– The lifespan of an average cat is 15-20 years.
– In some countries it is illegal to sell a kitten that is younger than 8 weeks old (the time it takes for its mother’s milk to dry up). This helps prevent the spread of kitten mills and uneducated breeders/sellers who sell sick kittens.
