There’s hardly a person who hasn’t heard of giant cats – the magnificent Maine Coon. They win people’s hearts because they are unnaturally large (a size unusual in domestic cats). The Maine Coon is considered to be the largest domestic cat breed in the world, with a strong and muscular body. Females weigh 5-6 kilograms and males twice that, 7-12 kilograms.
Despite their enormous body, Maine Coons are not clumsy creatures, but like all cats, they are graceful, curious and really friendly – they can follow their owners for days on end (and they don’t get annoyed by it).
What should you expect if you want to adopt such a wonderful animal?
I’m glad you’re thinking of getting a pet, they always brighten up a gloomy day, but before you go and get one of these magnificent cats, you should find out more about them and, of course, how to care for them.
If you want to make friends with a Maine Coon, you should knowthat it is a partial or even complete reflection of the owner’s character. Cats feel the attention of their owner and copy a certain pattern of behaviour.These animals are completely non-conflicted, non-aggressive, absolutely calm, but at the same time they love being the centre of attention. You can be sure that the pet will occupy the most visible place in the house for resting or sleeping.
Advantages and disadvantages
The main advantages of Maine Coons are:
They are extremely friendly and helpful;
if properly cared for, the pets should be free from disease, as this breed is virtually free of specific diseases (except in old age);
beloved animals will have a special bond with their owners;
they have no fear of the cold;
they are really fabulously beautiful!
These are just some of the obvious advantages of this cat breed. You will have the opportunity to find out more about them if you decide to buy one.
Maine Coon disadvantages:
A special diet, which is slightly more expensive than that of ordinary cats;
sand the box must be cleaned immediately as it will give off a pungent, unpleasant odour;
these cats have a strong hunting instinct – in the wild, a cat can catch any bird it comes across (including domestic birds) and destroy many nests;
they do not tolerate heat.
It is important to bear in mind that this breed of cat grows up to about 3 years old, both physically and mentally. So don’t be surprised if a cat of five or ten kilograms squashes someone while acting and playing in a childish manner.
