There are currently more than 200 different dog breeds, but not all of them are very popular. Sometimes the popularity of dog breeds is influenced by films or TV series, but this is only temporary fame (this is what happened with Saint Bernards after the film „Beethoven“ – the popularity of the Saint Bernard breed has now dropped significantly). However, some dog breeds have maintained their popularity for years and years, so let’s take a look at which dog breeds are currently attracting the most attention.
1. Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retrievers have been the most popular dog breed in the UK, USA and Canada since 1991. They are very friendly, easy to train and obedient dogs who are very attached to all members of their family. Labrador Retrievers can definitely be considered as all-purpose dogs – they adapt well to their owners’ lifestyles, they like to interact with people of all ages, they can do certain dog sports, become guides for the blind, take part in canine therapy classes, etc.
2. German Shepherd Dog
German Shepherds are confident dogs, friendly and good-natured. Due to their high trainability, German Shepherds often become service dogs and can search for people or objects. They have excellent hearing and an extremely sensitive sense of smell, so they can be used in a wide variety of applications. German Shepherds are generally not trusted by strangers and can make excellent guard dogs if properly trained.
3. Golden Retriever
The Golden Retriever is a dog with a calm temperament and absolutely no aggression. This breed makes excellent family friends, as Golden Retrievers get along well with people of all ages, and are happy to interact with children. These dogs often take part in canine therapy classes and help disabled people – properly trained Golden Retrievers can learn more than 50 different commands.
4. English Bulldog
English Bulldogs are a dog that is adored by some and feared by others. However, although the appearance of English Bulldogs may seem a little intimidating, they are very friendly and willing to interact with both adults and children. They are very intelligent pets who understand their owners in just half a word. It is true that English Bulldogs are often a bit stubborn.
5. Biglie
The Bigle is a medium-sized hunting dog that is friendly and intelligent. They are easy to care for, have strong health and longevity (the average life expectancy of a biglie is 12-15 years). They are very charming and quite quick to train, but it should be remembered that they have a strong hunting instinct – it is not even highly recommended to lead a biglie off the lead.
6. French Bulldog
French Bulldogs – one of the most beautiful ornamental dog breeds, and therefore gaining more and more popularity in Lithuania in recent years. French Bulldogs are intelligent and relatively easy to train, but often stubborn. French Bulldogs are usually quite active, but they are not always willing to leave the house in bad weather. If you decide to get a pet of this breed, choose a really reputable kennel and check the health tests of the puppies’ parents – unfortunately, this breed cannot boast very good health.
