Siamese cats are also known as Thai cats (Thailand was called Siam until 1949).This breed is one of the most intelligent and curious cats, and is eager to be as close to its owner as possible. Siamese cats are very playful, attention-loving and receptive. If the owner is patient, he or she will be able to teach the pet various tricks. They are very energetic, love various cat pranks and „talking“. Siamese cats are not suitable for those cat lovers who do not have enough time for their pet, or for those who expect their cat to be calm and quiet.

History of the breed

The first cats of this breed originated in the Kingdom of Siam, giving the breed its name. It is a rather old breed of cat, said to have been around six hundred years ago (or even longer!) It is difficult to determine where these blue-eyed beauties originated from, but it is believed that their ancestor was the wild Bengal cat, which lived in southern Asia. Siamese cats acquired their distinctive print due to a mutation in the gene responsible for pigment production. In 1871, Siamese cats were introduced at an exhibition held at the Crystal Palace in London. Almost 20 years later, Siamese cats were introduced to the USA, but they had difficulty adapting to the climate and did not spread immediately. By the 1950s, the Siamese cat standard was already similar to the current one, with several new breeding colours introduced, and now there are many more.

Siamese cats: appearance

The Siamese cat is of medium size, with a very graceful and elegant body, yet muscular (the Siamese cat is heavier than it looks at first sight!) The hind paws are longer than the front. The head is wedge-shaped when viewed from the front and the neck is quite long. The ears are large and erect, triangular. The eyes are inclined towards the nose, almond-shaped and deep blue in colour. The coat of the Siamese cat is short, shiny and fine. The cats of this breed are most recognisable by their characteristic „colouring“. There are many colour variations (32 are currently recognised): cream with brown spots, brownish with yellowish brown spots, white with red spots, etc. It is important that the spots in the coat match the main coat colour.

Siamese cats: character

Siamese cats are social and affectionate. They always enjoy the company of people and do not shy away from interacting not only with their owners but also with guests. However, they usually feel a special bond with only one member of the family, and even in the first year of life, it is noticeable which member of the family the cat considers to be its only master. Siamese cats are happy to interact with other cats if they are friendly, and are also good with dogs. Another distinctive feature of these cats – is their loud meow, which is very sonorous. Siamese cats do not show their voice very often, which is why they are not the favourite of all cat fanciers. The cat will not like it if you pass by the place where it sleeps often and will also get annoyed if you take it away from its favourite armchair. They can defend their favourite places like dogs! Siamese cats are very curious – they can easily learn to open not only doors, but also drawers.
